Summary

Scheduled Monument and Grade II listed cross base. One of several wayside crosses that would have marked the route between Abbots Moss and Vale Royal Abbey. It is thought to be late medieval. It consists of a square sandstone plinth supporting a square stone with a hollowed top.

The Schule description describes this as a waysde cross but the listing building description describes this stone as a Plague Stone. Plague stones were used as an exchange point for plague sufferers to leave disinfected money to pay for food and other goods.
