Monument details

HER Number:130/2/2
Type of record:Archaeology
Name:Little Moreton Hall Gardens

Within the moat of Little Moreton Hall are the remains of an Elizabethan formal garden. The principal monument is a circular prospect mound, being the more poorly preserved example of two, in the vicinity of the hall. A prospect mound is an artificial hill, created to provide a viewing platform of the landscaped view (or prospect). The present knot garden is a 20th century restoration based on a Jacobean published example. Geophysical work has attempted to delineate the original plan. The Hall, moat and prospect mound are a Scheduled Monument.
